Attorney Yehuda Wenstein named new AG

Justice Minister Ne'eman informs PM Netanyahu of his chosen candidate to replace Menachem Mazuz as Israel's next attorney general

Justice Minister Yaakov Ne'eman informed Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Thursday morning that he has chosen Attorney Yehuda Weinstein as his candidate to be Israel's next attorney general.

Weinstein is a highly regarded criminal lawyer in the private sector. His clients include Prime Minister Netanyahu, former Shas Chairman Aryeh Deri, and former Prime Minister Ehud Olmert. His main expertise is in criminal law – an important field for the position of attorney general.

Ne'eman made his recommendation after a committee appointed to select a list of candidates declared that its efforts had failed and returned the mandate given to it to the government, which decided that Ne'eman would present his own candidate.

Ne'eman made his decision after reviewing the material handed over to him by the committee and additional documents, conversations with the three candidates' proponents, as well as personal meetings with each candidate.

After closely examining the matter, Ne'eman reached the conclusion that Attorney Weinstein was the best candidate at these times, when there is a need to strengthen the rule of law and the law enforcement system and fight crimes, due to his vast experience in a wide range of fields, both in the public system and as part of a private practice.

Weinstein's associates expressed their satisfaction with Ne'eman's recommendation, saying that the selected attorney was the most suitable candidate for the job, noting his extensive expertise in the criminal field.

According to estimates, the appointment will be backed by the government.

The next stage is presenting the recommended candidate to the government and giving the ministers a week to present their reservations. In the event of no additional obstacles, the government is expected to approve the appointment in about a week and a half.
