Police chief's car phone stolen

Police estimate burglars did not know vehicle belongs to Commissioner Dudi Cohen

Unknown assailants on Friday smashed the windshield of Police Commissioner Dudi Cohen's car, which was parked near his home on Herzog Street in the central city of Givatayim, and stole his car phone.

The police spokesman said the stolen phone did not contain any operational numbers. An investigation has been launched into the incident, and the police estimate that the burglars did not know the car belonged to Commissioner Cohen. Cohen and his family members were at home when the car was broken into.

Police forces were dispatched to the area and began searching for the perpetrators, while members of the division of Identification and Forensic Science examined the crime scene. No suspects have been arrested so far.

The police evacuated the car from the area, leaving broken glass on the floor and pavement. It should be noted that the police commissioner's apartment building is guarded by a security officer around the clock.

Cohen: This is private matter

Several hours after his car was broken into, Cohen left his house from a back exit and tried to avoid the cameras. When the photographers began approaching him, he demanded that they turn off their cameras and leave him alone.

"This is my private life. Leave me alone, it's disrespectful," he told them.

The police commissioner came out of the house in order to receive an alternative car following the burglary. He was dressed in plain clothes and walked in the streets of Givatayim with a neighbor and without a security guard.

Violent acts against law enforcement officials and judges have been on the rise recently. The police received a few days ago a letter threatening Cohen's life. Immediately upon receiving the letter, the police opened a joint investigation with Shin Bet units. In addition, security measures were tightened around the commissioner.

The intimidation letter read, "You have been marked for the world to come. Your judgment day is near." . It was not signed or addressed.

Supreme Court President Dorit Beinish was attacked with a shoe during a court session several months ago, and the car of Akko Judge Moshe Gilad was set on fire.

Courts Administration Director Judge Moshe Gal received a fax recently reading, "Another judge must be murdered just as they murdered in the past. We will kill a judge with a LAU missile."
