Artzi was one of nine Israeli and foreign public figures, donors and scientists honored by the school.
"Shlomo Artzi belongs to the Israel's cultural elite," the academy said, explaining why it had picked the popular singer. "For years he has used his unique talent to outline the essence of being an Israeli through song. His social involvement indicates how special he is, and he undoubtedly represents the best of Israeli society."

Artzi said he was touched and surprised by the institution's decision to grant him the degree, and expressed regret that his father wasn't alive to see him receive it.
"He would have cried," he said.

The musician noted that he is familiar with the northern city of Haifa primarily through his yearly performances at the university.
"I get to know (the city) in the dark, with a big audience," he said.
Among the other dignitaries to receive the honorary doctorate was Supreme Court Justice Salim Joubran, who was accompanied to the ceremony by Chief Justice Asher Grunis and former State Comptroller Micha Lindenstrauss.
Spanish Justice Minister Alberto Ruiz-Gallardón, the president of the Italian province of Trento, Lorenzo Dellai and Nobel Laureate Professor Dan Shechtman were also among the recipients.
