Remembering Staff Sgt. Yuval Shoham: A man of intellect, justice and an open heart
Staff Sgt. Yuval Shoham, a native of Jerusalem, fell in battle in the northern Gaza Strip on Dec. 29, 2024, at the age of 22. Yuval was a rare combination of intellectual depth, boundless curiosity and a sensitive heart open to everyone. From an early age, he was known as "the noble one," a bright young man with a strong sense of truth and justice who never compromised his principles.
A passion for books and learning
Yuval's love of books and knowledge led him down a unique path. An avid reader, he immersed himself in philosophy and Jewish thought, choosing to spend two full years in pre-military preparatory programs at Beit Guvrin and Ein Prat to develop his character and shape his worldview.
Yuval believed strongly in bridging divides within Israeli society. His intellectual curiosity extended to the people around him. He had a gift for connecting with people from all walks of life, treating everyone as an equal and paying special attention to those often overlooked or left on the margins.
During his military service in the Armored Corps, he stood out for his warmth and concern for his fellow soldiers. Even inside his tank, during the most difficult days of fighting, he kept a small collection of books that nourished his spirit.
Embracing life
Yuval fell in the line of duty, but his extraordinary spirit lives on. His family and loved ones want more than simply to commemorate him, but to keep his values alive through action. His determination to overcome adversity, his ability to embrace each moment and his compassion for others leave a lasting legacy: to live life to the fullest, love others and never stop seeking the truth.
