Determined to become 'the next Golda Meir'

From early childhood, Shirel displayed boundless curiosity and a deep desire to make a difference. Her mother, Edna, who gave birth to her at age 40, recalls an exceptionally intelligent girl who wanted to know everything. At just 5 years old, Shirel told her mother she had decided to become "a second Golda Meir" so she could change the world.
At age 8, she discovered her love for Chopin's Romantic music, a passion she expressed through deeply moving piano performances that touched the hearts of everyone who heard her play.
Shirel stood out for her maturity and constant search for meaning. She transferred from a religious school to a secular one, planned to combine psychology with biblical studies to make the Bible more accessible to young people, and wrote down a question that would guide her: "What is my purpose?"
Her friends remember a cool, energetic young woman full of joy who was also a mature, understanding source of strength for those around her. They never saw her frustrated or sad. She always gave the impression that everything was fine, knew how to speak the truth with a smile and made everyone around her feel loved and appreciated.

Composure under fire

Her love for Israel and desire to defend it drove her to fight for a meaningful role on the front lines. Although her medical classification prevented her from serving as a combat soldier because she wore glasses, she chose to become a lookout soldier, "the country's eyes."
On Saturday, Oct. 7, amid intense fighting and heavy fire at the Nahal Oz command center, Shirel displayed extraordinary courage. She maintained remarkable composure, coordinated communications with military forces, manned several positions simultaneously and reassured those around her until her final moments, when her life was tragically cut short.
Her death left an immense void, but her legacy and music continue to resonate. A special memorial project has been established in her honor, placing pianos at IDF bases to keep her music alive. Shirel was, and remains, a young woman who embodied unity and love, someone who succeeded in making the world a better place during her 20 years of life.
Sgt. Shirel Mor, Border Defense Corps, was killed in action on Oct. 7, 2023, at the age of 20.
May her memory be a blessing.
