He immigrated from France and fell defending Israel: Remembering Ronny Ganizate
Sgt. Maj. (res.) Ronny Ganizate, an infantry soldier who fell in battle in southern Lebanon on Oct. 9, 2024, brought light, joy and boundless generosity to those around him. Ronny grew up in France as the youngest child in his family and was the heart of the household. From an early age, his involvement in the Bnei Akiva youth movement instilled in him a deep love for Jewish tradition, the Jewish people and the Land of Israel.
For Ronny, immigrating to Israel at 18 was never a question but a natural privilege, one that came with a profound sense of responsibility. He chose to enlist as a combat soldier in the Nahal Brigade alongside his close friends, driven by a desire to be an "ordinary Israeli" and do his full part for his country. His love for Israel knew no bounds, and he was determined to defend it at any cost.
A big kid, devoted father and true friend
In everyday life, Ronny was funny, mischievous and always smiling. He loved playing the piano and going on ski vacations. His wife, Shoshana, affectionately described him as the family's "big kid", a father who loved rolling around on the floor with his children, building with Lego, telling stories, and giving warm hugs. Yet beneath his playful nature was a sensitive soul who noticed even the smallest needs of others. He regularly volunteered for the toughest overnight guard shifts so others could sleep, looking after his fellow soldiers like an older brother and a devoted father. "We chose to come to Israel, and we won't let anyone harm it," he said.
Unwavering devotion until his final moments
Ronny never missed a day of reserve duty. His friends knew there was no need to ask whether he would show up; he was always the first to arrive. After the fighting erupted, he served three demanding rounds of reserve duty along Israel's northern border. Even in the rain, sleeping in tents and enduring harsh field conditions, he continued sending his family cheerful, optimistic videos, his face lit up by a broad smile.
Ronny was killed in action during a battle in southern Lebanon when his unit came under fire. He left behind his wife, children, loving family and devastated friends, along with a lasting legacy of humility, quiet generosity and unconditional love.
In his 36 years, Ronny accomplished more than many people do in an entire lifetime, leaving behind a light that will never fade.
