In memory of Capt. Yehonatan (Joni) Keren: A light of leadership, joy and giving
Capt. Yehonatan (Joni) Keren, who was 22 when he was killed, lived life at full volume and embodied striking contrasts: On the one hand, he was full of joie de vivre, a prankster who loved parties and music; on the other, he possessed a strong moral compass and a keen, incisive mind.
Joni grew up in Ma'ale Gilboa, where he stood out for his charisma and ability to draw people to him. He loved working in the dairy barn and in agriculture. Before enlisting in the military, he spent a year volunteering at a kibbutz with people with special needs, an experience that brought out the maturity and deep sensitivity that were hallmarks of his character.
A dedicated commander who led from the front
After his volunteer year, Joni enlisted in the Givati Brigade and later joined the Multidimensional Unit. He flourished as a commander, cared deeply for his soldiers and projected confidence and calm.
On Oct. 7, he rushed with his unit to fight in the communities near the Gaza border. He later attended officers' training, and upon completing the course, fulfilled his dream of becoming a team commander. Joni led his soldiers with determination, driven by a deep conviction that it was his duty to protect the country's citizens.
His death and the legacy he left behind
On Oct. 29, 2024, during an operational mission in Jabaliya in the northern Gaza Strip, an explosive device detonated in the building where Joni and his team were operating. Joni was killed in action alongside two of his soldiers.
He is survived by a loving family, a partner, and many friends who carry the memory of his captivating smile, the sparkle in his eyes, and the legacy he left behind: to live fully in the present through action, generosity, and love of country.
Capt. Yehonatan (Joni) Keren of the Multidimensional Unit was killed in action on Oct. 29, 2024. He was 22.
May his memory be a blessing.
