A legacy of giving, courage and love: Remembering Superintendent Stanislav “Stas” Sheinkman

When those who loved Maj. Stanislav “Stas” Sheinkman speak about him, one phrase comes up again and again: “one of a kind.”
Sheinkman, a commander and fighter in the Israel Border Police, was killed on Oct. 7, 2023, at just 40 years old. He was not only an outstanding commander and an Israeli hero, but someone his loved ones describe as a real-life Superman, a man who touched countless lives, left a profound mark wherever he went and lived with total devotion, a strong moral compass and a deep love for others.

From a young immigrant to an outstanding fighter and commander

Stas’ story was one of determination and deep commitment to Israel. He immigrated to the country on his own and was raised by his grandmother, who meant the world to him.
He was always known for his work ethic, tenacity and charisma, naturally drawing others to him. He was the eternal big brother, the father figure who took people under his wing and made sure they had everything they needed.
He began his security career as a fighter and commander, serving in the Gaza undercover unit, where he was recognized as an outstanding soldier in the Gaza Division. From there, he went on to serve in Yamam, Israel’s elite national counterterrorism unit.
For Stas, the unit was never simply a job. It was a calling, an expression of his commitment to the country and a second family. Even when his family urged him to slow down for the sake of life at home, his devotion to the country would not allow him to step away completely. He was appointed the unit’s operations officer, but the fighter in him never faded.

The heart of the family: Husband, father and moral compass

Alongside his distinguished security career, Stas was, above all, a devoted family man. His love for his wife, Alona, whom he had known since childhood, was something those around them often spoke about. He was a present, involved and attentive father to their three children. As Alona described it, the bond between Stas and his daughter was almost beyond words, a connection in which a single look was enough.
He taught his children not to be afraid and instilled in them compassion, decency and respect for others.
“Stas always knew the right path, the right answer. Even today, I catch myself thinking: What would Stas do?”

His final battle on the morning of Oct. 7

On the morning of Oct. 7, Stas was serving as the unit’s duty officer when the deadly attack began. He did not hesitate. Driven by a profound sense of duty and an unwavering commitment to protect Israeli civilians, he headed directly into the fighting.
In his final phone call with his wife, he still tried to reassure her in his calm voice. But compelled by his determination to save lives, he made his way to the entrance of Kibbutz Re’im, where he fought courageously under a barrage of gunfire from dozens of terrorists until he was killed in battle.
Superintendent Stas Sheinkman is survived by a wife, three children and a loving family; he left behind grieving friends and countless people who owe their lives to men like him. He was, and will always remain, the heart, soul and moral compass of those who had the privilege of knowing him.
Superintendent Stanislav “Stas” Sheinkman of the Israel Border Police was killed on Oct. 7, 2023. He was 40.
May his memory be a blessing.
