The hero determined to defend his country: The story of Lt. Shai Ayeli
Lt. Shai Ayeli, a soldier and officer in the IDF's elite Unit 669 combat search and rescue force, was killed in battle in the northern Gaza Strip on Dec. 21, 2023, at just 21 years old. He left behind a loving family, devoted friends and an inspiring story of determination, humility and quiet leadership that helped him overcome seemingly insurmountable obstacles.
The boy who defied the odds
Shai grew up in Ashkelon as the youngest of four children, seven years younger than his sister Shani. "I may have been the older sister, but over time we became really close friends. I felt more comfortable with him than with anyone else," Shani recalls wistfully. "He was always the first to step up, the first to take action and the first to help. He was the kind of person who would say, 'I'll do it. I can do it.'"
Shai's childhood was something of a Cinderella story. As a boy with heart problems and a low military medical fitness rating, he was expected to follow a conventional, uneventful path through his mandatory service. But for Shai, that was only the starting point. His friend Noam Kedar recalls, "He wanted to take that opportunity and turn it into a springboard. In the end, he broke through every possible barrier."
Shai worked tirelessly against the odds. He raised his military medical fitness rating to 97, the highest classification, devoted himself to combat fitness training and even woke up at 5 a.m. for swimming sessions in the sea. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he brought his friends along to train on the dunes before dawn, driven by a genuine desire to see them succeed as well.
Quiet, humble leadership
Despite his unwavering determination, Shai was remarkably modest. When he was accepted into the elite Unit 669, he never boasted about his achievement. "He never talked about anything. He didn't share his successes or his failures," his friends recall.
One of his greatest passions was his love for Israel and exploring its landscapes. Every leave from the military became an opportunity for countless hikes and outdoor adventures with his close-knit group of childhood friends. Even after joining his unit, Shai continued to push himself further, enrolling in officer training just a few months before the war broke out.
His final battle and lasting legacy
On Dec. 21, 2023, during an operation to clear a house in the northern Gaza Strip, Shai's unit encountered terrorists. During the ensuing exchange of fire, a burst of gunfire was directed at the soldiers. Shai was struck in the neck and killed instantly.
"It happened to him precisely because he was the best," his friends say through tears. "He always wanted to be first, to lead, and he always looked after the people around him. He took the fire, and thanks to him, we're here today."
Today, Shai's friends and family are working to preserve his memory through a commemorative film, hoping his story will reach every boy and girl in Israel. His sister Shani reflects on his legacy with a mixture of grief and pride: "He taught me never to give up on my goals. There is no anger, only a great deal of hope and optimism."
Lt. Shai Ayeli, of Unit 669, was killed in action on Dec. 21, 2023, at the age of 21.
May his memory be a blessing.
