'He touched thousands of lives': Remembering the Unit 669 rescue soldier who left a lasting legacy of kindness
Some people make their presence felt without ever raising their voices. Daniel Alloush was one of them. Tall and imposing, with broad shoulders, he was also remarkably gentle, with a constant smile and an endearing humility. "From the day he was born, he brought light into our home," his father, Yaakov, recalls. "His most remarkable quality was that he simply never wanted to stand out, and that's exactly why he stood out wherever he went." Even as a child, Daniel was eager to share and give to others. "Whenever we bought him something sweet, he always made sure everyone got some," his mother, Sigal, remembers.
Daniel embraced life with enthusiasm, pursuing everything from running and soccer to water polo. As he grew older, he set his sights on joining one of the military's elite units. When he learned he had been assigned to Unit 669, he was thrilled. "It's a unit that saves lives, not takes them," he told his parents.
During his service, Daniel became a natural leader who inspired confidence and calm even in the most tense situations. His teammates remember a hero who descended from helicopters into the heart of danger to help those in need. "It was hard to walk down the street with him. You felt like you were walking with the mayor. He would shake hands, hug people, offer heartfelt encouragement and never say a bad word about anyone. He touched thousands of lives."
Alongside his military service, Daniel built a loving home with his wife, Kimi, whom he met in Portugal. He was a deeply devoted and involved father. Despite his demanding schedule, he made a point of stopping by his parents' home almost every morning for a quick "cafecito" before work. "How many 37-year-olds still stop by their parents' house for coffee before work?" his mother asks sorrowfully. "It was during the shiva that I realized just how special he was."
On the night of September 11, 2024, during a complex rescue operation in the Gaza Strip, the helicopter carrying Daniel and his team crashed. He was killed while carrying out what he saw as his life's mission: saving lives. Just a short time earlier, he had spoken with his parents, telling them about the smiles and positive atmosphere among his teammates. The devastating news, delivered by a knock at the door, left an immeasurable void. Yet his remarkable spirit, his love for others and the profound impact he had on so many lives will endure.
Sergeant Major Daniel Alloush, of the Israeli Air Force, was killed on September 11, 2024, at the age of 37.
May his memory be a blessing.
