Champion swimmer who became a heroic commander: Capt. Eden Nimri killed in battle at Nahal Oz
Capt. Eden Nimri, a team commander in the IDF’s Sky Rider unit, was an exceptional young woman who combined academic excellence, remarkable athletic achievements as a competitive swimmer and inspiring military leadership. She was killed in a heroic battle at the Nahal Oz outpost on Oct. 7, 2023, after shielding her soldiers and helping prevent terrorists from reaching the living quarters.
From the moment she was born, Eden brought a special energy with her. Her mother, Sharon, recalls with a smile: “She just came out ... flying forward with her arm like she was doing a swimming stroke, and she was smiling.”
She was born as a gift to her older sister, Hadar, and was described as an exceptionally sweet and remarkably smart baby. “Eden was so mature that sometimes she seemed older than I was,” her mother said. “I learned so much from her.”
Eden’s life was defined by extraordinary self-discipline. As a competitive swimmer with Maccabi Water Park Reut, she got up at 5:30 every morning for grueling training sessions while also studying in a gifted students program and taking part in an advanced mathematics enrichment program.
Her coach compared her to Michael Jordan because of her determination and the ambitious goals she set for herself. Her fellow swimmer and friend Yael Danieli recalled: “That same remarkable self-discipline defined Eden in everything she did.”
Despite the prospect of continuing her swimming career at a U.S. college, Eden chose meaningful military service. “I knew she wouldn’t give that up,” her sister Hadar said. “She understood that this was the path she was taking, even though it meant eventually leaving swimming behind.”
After a brief period in the Israeli Air Force pilots course, Eden found her calling in the Sky Rider unit and went on to become an officer. In a twist of fate, she experienced her first combat deployment at Nahal Oz during Operation Guardian of the Walls, the same place where she would later fight her final battle.
On Saturday morning, when the attack began, Eden and her team rushed to a fortified shelter in their pajamas. Her father recalled how she “took command; she really took command.”
She positioned her soldiers as safely as she could and took up a position at the shelter entrance facing the terrorists’ approach. With remarkable composure, she set an ambush, exchanged fire with the attackers and killed a terrorist as grenades were hurled toward her.
Her actions allowed other soldiers to escape toward nearby rooms and survive. “She prevented them from reaching the women’s living quarters and the shelter where the male soldiers were,” her mother said through her grief. “She didn’t think about herself at all.” Eden fought the terrorists at close range until she was shot and killed.
The devastating news reached her family after two days of uncertainty and fading hope. “Our lives exploded. They completely fell apart,” said her sister Hadar, whose wedding later took place under the heavy shadow of Eden’s absence. “One piece was gone, a huge, central piece.”
Today, Eden’s family is dedicated to preserving her memory and keeping her light alive. One of the most moving initiatives established in her honor is “Team Nimri” in Modiin, a combat fitness group for teenage girls.
Her friend Yael said that even today, whenever she goes swimming, she feels close to Eden. “She really made me understand what matters,” she said.
Capt. Eden Nimri will forever be remembered as a symbol of excellence, female strength and extraordinary courage that saved lives.
