BDS websites see 33% increase in traffic over past year

Despite consistent rise in people browsing websites promoting boycott against Israel, their overall traffic remains low.

There has been a 33 percent rise in traffic to websites associated with the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions Movement (BDS) over the past year, data collected by SimilarWeb for Yedioth Ahronoth shows. Despite that, overall traffic to these websites is still considered low.

The data comes from several leading BDS websites, among them bdsmovement.net. These websites organize boycotts and promote petitions against Israel, post anti-Israel propaganda and news about BDS efforts.

BDS websites saw 285,000 entries from users worldwide in the first quarter of 2015. In comparison, only 214,000 entries were registered in the first quarter of 2014. This indicates on a 33 percent increase in traffic to such websites over the course of the past year.

In the third quarter of 2013, the main BDS websites only had 86,000 views, which indicates on a slow but consistent trend of increase in the number of people interested in boycotting efforts against Israel.

However, it is important to note that the current traffic to BDS websites, 285,000 in one quarter, is not particularly high - especially considering the fact these are international websites.

The only time traffic to these websites spiked considerably was during Operation Protective Edge last summer. In the third quarter of 2014, during the war in Gaza, BDS websites had some 2 million entries.

According to SimilarWeb, 47 percent of users visiting BDS websites were from the US, followed by 14 percent from Britain, 8.3 percent from Canada, 2.8 percent from Ireland, 2.47 percent from Germany and 1.86 percent from Israel.
