In Europe, the penny still hasn’t dropped

Op-ed: Years of accusing Israel of treating Palestinians like Nazis treated Jews, years of total blindness towards Palestinians' rejection of any peace proposal, have led to intellectual disability among Europe's elites in general, and Germany's in particular.

In the past week, Europe has been in a frenzy following the terror attacks in Paris and intelligence information that Islamic State members are planning to carry out further attacks against France, Germany, Belgium, Italy and Sweden.

But that same Europe, in complete chaos, is busy helping moves initiated by the anti-Israel boycott campaign, which has turned into Hamas' propaganda wing. And we are talking about the same Hamas which calls the occupation Rome, just like the Islamic State leader.

But Europe is refusing to listen. German weekly Der Spiegel has never reported that Dr. Yunis Al Astal, one of Hamas' spiritual shepherds and a parliament member on behalf of the movement, called for the "occupation of Rome and the two Americas." The newspaper has also failed to report that Hamas' television channel is calling to kill not only Jews, but also "Christians, to the very last of them."

The enlightened newspaper has never turned to the German government or to the European Union and inquired why they are still funding of the Palestinian Authority, although the PA funds terrorists who murdered Jews. And we are talking about terrorists who, if they only could, would carry out an attack in the newspaper's offices as well. But the distinguished newspaper is only worried about the initiatives of the terrorists' supporters, who are advancing the boycott against Israel.

If anyone thought that Europe's "penny has dropped," they had better shake off any illusions. Terror is not making those who are addicted to illusions any more sober. Years of "if we'll only be nice to them, everything will be okay," years of accusing the Jews - in other words, Israel - of treating the Palestinians like the Nazis treated the Jews, years of total blindness towards the Palestinians' rejection of any peace proposal, years of a self-brainwash, have led to intellectual disability among Europe's elites in general, and Germany's in particular.

We should hope and pray that Europe succeeds in dealing with terror better than the way it is dealing with the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. We should hope that terror doesn’t strike in Europe again. Terror isn't opening the elites' eyes, but is rather pushing them more and more towards self-deception.

The problem is not the confusion created by the product labeling orders. The problem is much worse, because what is happening to Europe is also happening to some of the elites in the United States. And we should not disregard the intellectual disability, because it affects the public opinion, and later on the political elites too. Let's not belittle it.
