Beinyamin Ben-Eliezer, also known as "Fuad," is one of the leading members of the Labor Party. He was party chairman for two years.
Born in Iraq in 1936, Ben-Eliezer immigrated to Israel in 1950. In addition to Hebrew, he speaks English and Arabic.
Ben-Eliezer joined the Labor Party after a long military career, during which he served as coordinator of activities in the territories and attained the rank of brigadier general.
He studied at the National Security Academy.
Ben-Eliezer has been a member of Knesset since 1984, during which he has served on various committees including Foreign Affairs and Defense; House; and Labor and Welfare.
He served as Minister of Housing and Construction in the government of Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin (1992-1996). During the Labor-Likud unity government under Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, he served as Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Communications, Minister of Housing and Construction, and Minister of Defense.
Ben-Eliezer is married with five children and lives in Rishon Letzion.
