Flotilla 13, or Shayetet 13 in Hebrew, is the Israel Defense Force's naval commando unit. The unit's insignia consists of a sword within a shield, flanked by bat wings.
Flotilla 13 is considered one of the army’s elite units and has developed special warfare capabilities. Its fighters undergo a rigorous selection and training process, and have various weapons and equipment at their disposal, including fast attack boats.
Despite the unit's focus on naval operations, it has played an instrumental role in anti-terror ground operations in the territories in recent years. Its most widely publicized operation was the 2002 takeover of the Karin A Palestinian weapons-smuggling ship in the Red Sea.
