The most recent post held by Jibril Rajoub was national security advisor to the late Palestinian Authority Chairman Yasser Arafat. Previously, he headed the Palestinian Preventative Security Service in the West Bank.

Rajoub was born Dura, in the West Bank, in 1953. He spent 17 years in an Israeli jail after attacking an IDF convoy, and speaks fluent Hebrew.

Rajoub was released from prison in 1985 and expelled to Lebanon in 1988. He later moved to Tunis and subsequently became one of Arafat's most trusted lieutenants. His relationship with Arafat, however, was marked by ups and downs over the years.

Rajoub, who is considered a moderate and a pragmatist, has developed close contacts with both Israeli and American officials.
