Hanan Ashrawi is a longtime Palestinian spokeswoman and scholar. She was born in 1946 and raised in Ramallah.

Ashrawi holds a master's degree in English from the American University of Beirut and a Ph.D. in medieval and comparative literature from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville.ย
She served as the English Department Chair at Bir Zeit University in the West Bank during the 1970s and 1980s, and was later appointed as the Dean of the Faculty of Arts.ย
Ashrawi also served as the Palestinian delegation's official spokeswoman during negotiations with Israel in 1991-1993.ย
In 1996, she became a member of the Palestinian Legislative Council, and served as Minister of Education and research in 1996-1998.ย
Ashrawi has also published books, short stories, and poems dealing with Palestinian culture and politics, and continues to promote the Palestinian cause around the world.
