Magen David Adom

Published: 01.26.05, 14:28 / Israel Homepage

Magen David Adom (MDA), which in English means "Red Star of David," is Israel's emergency medical, health, blood and disaster service. The organization was established in 1930 in Tel Aviv by seven doctors, and initially operated on a volunteer basis.

In July 1950, the Knesset ratified the Magen David Adom Law, which defined MDA's responsibilities.

Today, MDA staff and volunteers continue to play a pivotal role in providing lifesaving services in times of peace, as well as in the aftermath of terrorist attacks.

Despite their efforts, MDA is not recognized by the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.
