Izz al-Din al-Qassam Brigades

Published: 01.26.05, 14:27 / Israel Homepage

The Izz al-Din al-Qassam Brigades is the armed wing of the radical Islamic Hamas organization.

The group is named for a Syrian-born radical preacher who resided in Haifa and called for Holy War against both the British and Jews prior to the establishment of Israel.

Al-Qassam was killed in action in 1935 and has inspired generations of Palestinian nationalists and terrorists.

Brigades members have carried out numerous terror attacks against civilians and soldiers, including suicide bombings at the heart of Israeli cities, shootings and kidnappings.
