New trend: 'settler bracelets'

Yesha council hopes to sweep nation with new anti-disengagement fad

The settlers are presenting a new fad in hopes of sweeping the nation: Yesha council is set to distribute orange bracelets inscribed with "Let the nation decide" as their latest form of anti-disengagement protest.

Settler leaders are already wearing the bracelets, and have also decided to offer them to the so-called Likud "rebels," who also object to the Gaza pullout, free of charge.

A Council member said the organization has received thousands of requests from residents interested in the NIS 5 (about $1) bracelet, including inquiries from schools and youth movements.

Lance Armstrong first started the bracelet fashion trend by selling his yellow bracelets to raise money for cancer patients.

A similar pink bracelet, supporting breast cancer, is also available

'It's an example of citizen power'

Yesha Council officials said they believe wearing the bracelet would call greater attention to their demand for a national referendum on the pullout plan.

The initiative would be a demonstration of citizen power and strengthen opposition to the government's decision, one official said.

One council member who declined to be named said wearing the bracelet is a reminder to all residents of Israel that the ability to influence and contribute is in their hands.

"A leader cannot operate without public support," he said.
