'We see an opportunity'

Jordan to offer help in facilitating Israeli-Syrian talks, new Jordanian ambassador tells Ynet; pledges to push for release of Jordanian prisoners held in Israel

TEL AVIV - The current positive atmosphere in the Middle East should be taken advantage of in order to achieve comprehensive, just peace, Jordan's new ambassador to Israel told Ynet in his first interview here.

Jordan is willing to offer its help in the disengagement process, Marouf al-Bakhit said, but added his country is also willing and able to push Israeli-Syrian negotiations.

All sides must show their commitment to the diplomatic effort, Bakhit said. However, the new envoy stressed the question of Jordanian prisoners jailed in Israel, which he said is of the utmost importance.

"The issue will be the top priority," he said.

'Military solution is no solution at all'

Recent months have brought a significant, positive change, Bakhit says, and adds the new atmosphere includes encouraging signs and trust-building measures taken by leaders on both sides.

"We see an opportunity that must be invested in and taken advantage of in order to end the suffering afflicting the region in recent years," he said. "The occupation must end in order to achieve just, comprehensive peace in the Middle East."

The decision to return both Egypt's and Jordan's ambassador to Israel was intended to boost diplomatic efforts, Bakhit said.

The Jordanian ambassador cautioned, however, that results should not be expected in a matter of days. In any case, he said, it is clear a military solution is no solution at all.

"It only led to much blood being spilled on both sides," he said. "That's why we need to do everything to move the diplomatic process forward toward the goal of a just, comprehensive peace."

Bakhit stressed that Jordan is willing to do "everything for peace," and noted his country and King Abdullah enjoy international credibility, which could be used to advance Israeli Palestinian talks, and also to contribute to the Israeli-Syrian track.

"We are willing to assist in all tracks, whatever is needed for the peace process," he said.
