Nanny caught on video abusing babies

Woman in Israel is arrested after hidden camera taped her abusing twin infants in her care

RAMAT GAN - Police on Tuesday arrested a nanny after a hidden camera captured the woman abusing the infant twins entrusted to her care in the Tel Aviv suburb of Ramat Gan.

Following the arrests, the parents who installed the camera called on all parents to do the same to ensure the well-being of their children.

“We call on all parents to install a camera in their homes so they can see what their nanny is doing with the children," the parents said. "She could be the nicest, most trustworthy woman in the world, as our nanny was, but only after seeing the video do you know what’s happening.”

About a month ago, when the twins – a boy and girl – turned one-and-a-half years old, the mother decided to go back to work, so the couple put an ad in the newspaper for a nanny. They received hundreds of responses, the parents say, and in the end they chose Galina Goriatzkin.

“We narrowed it down to two we wanted, but one was no longer interested," the parents said. "Galina came to us with references, and when we called to check they told us that she was a good and skilled nanny. Only later did we discover that she didn’t know how to change diapers, bathe the children, or even prepare food for babies. When we realized this, we decided to install a camera at home. It cost us just 350 shekels (about 75 U.S. dollars). We put it next to the television, and we hid the recorder under a pillow.”

“For the first two days she was fine with the children, but she was sometimes rude,” the parents said.

'When I saw the pictures, I just began to scream'

Last Thursday, they decided to use the camera again, and when the babies went to sleep in the evening, they watched the video.

“When I saw the pictures, I just began to scream,” the mother said. “I screamed and cried. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. My husband called the nanny and told her ‘I know very well what you did. Don’t come back here again.’

“She initially denied it, but she later claimed she was on edge because she was sleeping only four hours a night. The next day we took the tape to the police and they arrested her.”

The father said he did not respond violently to the nanny because “We just aren’t violent people.”

Following the experience, the parents are urging all parents to install a camera at home so they will know what is happening at home when they are at work.

“It’s a very small price and very important for the children’s well being,” the mother said.

Following broadcast of the images, the family’s doctor contacted the parents to ask that they bring the two infants immediately for a check up to see if they suffered any health damage from the shaking and blows they received.
