Jail time for mooning soldiers

Two soldiers bared their rear ends at dedication ceremony for new Defense Ministry building

TEL AVIV - Two Israel Defense Forces soldiers who bared their rear ends at the official dedication of the new Defense Ministry building in Tel Aviv were sentenced Sunday to 21 days in prison.

The incident took place last Thursday evening in the "Kirya" defense base, the nerve center of the Israeli military, as the soldiers were standing in a fourth-floor window of a building adjacent to where the ceremony was being held.

The event was being attended by the most senior defense officials, such as Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz, IDF Chief of Staff Moshe Yaalon, Defense Ministry Director-General Amos Yaron and deputy IDF Chief of Staff Dan Halutz.

While speeches were being made at the ceremony, the two soldiers mooned the audience from above, causing great embarassment to those gathered for the event and angering senior defense officials.

Within a few hours, the two soldiers were located and they confessed to what they had done. Their military trial was set for Sunday morning.

Military sources said that despite the incident, these were two quality soldiers serving in the human resources branch of the IDF. One of them was even supposed to receive a prize for outstanding soldier.

The two soldiers were unable to explain why they mooned the audience, saying only that they were being silly.
