Kosher phone - No Internet

'Kosher’ cell phone launched

Rabbis approve new phones, which do not allow users to surf the Internet or access “indecent” services

TEL AVIV - The world’s first “kosher” cell phone has been launched by local communication service provider Mirs Wednesday.

The three new kosher devices, which have been approved by leading rabbis, are expected to hit the ultra-Orthodox market soon.

The new phones are relatively simple devices that lack some features available on most regular cell phones. The devices do not allow users to surf the Internet or send instant messages, and also block access to “indecent” numbers such as erotic and gambling services.

Meanwhile, the phone would enable calls on Saturday, but only in cases of emergency.

Rabbis call for cell phone ban

Several months ago, leading rabbis called no the ultra-Orthodox public to refrain from using existing cell phones because they provide access to “tainted” content.

The rabbis later designated a special “rabbi committee for communication affairs” to examine proposals for a “kosher” phone.

In order to avoid imitations, the phone would display a special image when turned on. The device itself would also receive a “kosher stamp.”
