TEL AVIV - The watchdog charged with regulating commercial television and radio programming has declared war on Israel’s newest reality show, “The Models.” Members of the Second Broadcasting Authority’s television committee were shocked after watching an episode of the show, which pits a group of young women against each other in a battle for top model honors. The committee has decided to push the show to the 11 p.m. timeslot, ahead of a hearing of the matter, which may lead to the show’s cancellation. The program currently airs at 9 p.m. on Israel’s Channel 10. ‘Show perpetuates male chauvinist perception’ The Broadcasting Authority, which was also presented with public complaints against the show, said committee members were surprised that Channel 10 approved the program. “The committee believes the show perpetuates a male chauvinist perception that views women as a body and an object,” the Authority said. “In addition, the show provides a negative example for young girls and the way they treat themselves and their bodies.” The shows first two episodes achieved a rating of about 10 percent, a relatively high figure for Channel 10, which is still struggling against its local rivals. The decision to move the show to a later timeslot is therefore expected to be a difficult blow for the channel. A Channel 10 spokesman told Ynet the decision was clearly unreasonable. “We intend to respond harshly and will announce our next move in the matter at the beginning of the week,” he said.
