Actor Barney Martin, best remembered for his role as Jerry Seinfeld’s father in the popular TV sitcom “Seinfeld,” died Monday at 82, the Hollywood Reporter says.

According to the magazine, Martin suffered from cancer.

Although Philip Bruns was the first to play the part of Morty Seinfeld, Martin took over the character in the show's second season in the episode titled "The Pony Remark." He subsequently made 20 appearances until the show's 1998 finale.

Role in 'Arthur'

Martin served as an air force pilot in World War II, and worked as a New York policeman before embarking on a  Broadway career that included the original production of "Chicago."

He also appeared in several films including a part in Mel Brook’s "The Producers," and played the role of Liza Minnelli's father in "Arthur" and its sequel.

A regular television guest star throughout the '70s and '80s, Martin appeared on some of the decades' best, such as "The Odd Couple," "Hill Street Blues," "St. Elsewhere," "Murphy Brown" and "The Wonder Years."
