Tisha b'Av

Published: 03.28.05, 14:22 / Israel Homepage

Tisha b'Av, which means "the ninth (day) of Av," is a day of mourning during which Jews fast to commemorate the destruction of the first and second Temples that stood in Jerusalem.

It usually occurs in August.

Babylonians destroyed the first Temple in 586 BCE and the Romans destroyed the second Temple in 70 CE.

Similar to Yom Kippur, Jews are forbidden to eat and drink (even water) on Tisha b'Av.
