Police: Israeli envoy attempted suicide

Israel's ambassador to Ethiopia is found at his hotel in critical condition from gunshot wounds; Ethiopian police suspect suicide
By Doron Sheffer|Updated:
Israel's ambassador to Ethiopia was found shot and wounded in Addis Ababa on Wednesday, in what Ethiopian police said was likely a suicide attempt.
"There was no indication that other parties were involved in the injuries suffered by the ambassador," Ethiopian police said in a statement read on Ethiopian television.
The Israeli Foreign Ministry has reported that Grossman's personal doctor said the ambassador is suffering from terminal cancer.
Grossman, who is in critical condition, is to be flown to Israel to be treated at Hadassah University Hospital in Jerusalem.
Grossman, 48, had served in the post since 2002 and was close to ending his term. Tens of thousands of Ethiopian Jews have immigrated to Israel from the Horn of Africa nation since the 1980s.
In 1982, Israel’s ambassador to the United Kingdom, Shlomo Argov, was shot and wounded by an assassin sent by late Palestinian terrorist Abu Nidal. The incident sparked the start of the Lebanon War.
