Israeli hurt in anti-fence protest

Border Guard officers fire tear gas grenades at demonstrators; left-wing activist sustains light injuries

BIL’IN - Israeli left-wing activist Yonatan Polak sustained light wounds during a demonstration held in a bid to obstruct construction of the West Bank security fence.

Polak and dozens of other Israelis arrived at the village of Bil’in, near Modi’in, Sunday in order to join local Palestinian protestors.

At one point, Border Guard police officers fired tear gas grenades at the demonstrators. One of the grenades apparently hit Polak in the head.

Polak later told Ynet officers fired the tear gas grenades when protestors were about to disperse.

“They aimed…directly at the protestors, as happens in all the demonstrations,” he said, and added that one grenades hit him in the head.

“I’m hurting badly,” he said, and condemned the Border Guard forces’ conduct.

‘Fence causes environmental damage’

Meanwhile, Bil’in resident Muhammad Khatib told Ynet the protest was quiet and was called to protest the fence’s negative effect on the environment.

“We torched several tires on purpose in order to illustrate the damage done to the environment,” he said.
