Shin Bet chief ‘ambushed’ by far right

Avi Dichter and next General Security Service Head Yuval Diskin get chilly reception during Hebron tour

HEBRON - Far right activists “ambushed” current Shin Bet Chief Avi Dichter and his replacement Yuval Diskin in Hebron Tuesday, with the encounter degenerating into a verbal clash between the two sides.

The two security officials arrived, under heavy guard, for a tour of a city, but were likely unaware the activists were prepared for the visit.

Leading far right figure Baruch Marzel was the first to “welcome” Dichter, yelling at him “aren’t you ashamed? You said the disengagement plan is dangerous, why haven’t you quit?”

“Quitting is a luxury reserved for cowards,” was Dichter’s reply according to the right-wing activists.

'This isn't Russia'

Subsequently, far right leader Itamar Ben Gvir shouted at the Shin Bet men: “Stop making people vanish, this isn't Russia. You’re not going to shut our mouths.”

The comments were made in light of far right fears that security authorities could resort to administrative detentions of Jewish extremists ahead of the pullout plan’s implementation.

At that point, and after other right-wing activists arrived at the scene, the two security officials left the area.

Ben Gvir later charged that the two men were "the people who brought us the agreements with the Arab enemy, and today they added insult to injury."
