Olmert makes friends with Sony robot during visit to Japan

Sony looks into collaboration with Israel

During visit to Japan, Trade Minister Ehud Olmert calls on increased Japanese involvement in peace process, commercial collaboration with Israel

TOKYO - Sony President Nobuyuki Idei instructed his vice-president to promptly organize a special team to examine the possibility of collaborating with Israeli companies, following Industry, Trade and Employment Minister Ehud Olmert's meeting with company officials in Japan Monday.

Olmert was particularly impressed by Sony's robot and was even photographed dancing with it.

He also visited the headquarters of NTT and Panasonic and suggested commercial collaboration with Israel, especially in regards to research and development, and technological knowledge.

NTT is also considering the possibility of establishing another laboratory in addition to the 12 currently in operation, which would operate in collaboration with Israel.

Great similarity

Upon arriving in Japan Sunday, Olmert called on Japan to become a major partner in the peace process, and also suggested the Japanese aid the Palestinians in establishing an independent economy.

"There is great similarity between our countries," he said speaking at a press conference Monday. "We don't have natural resources, but we do have knowledge, productive motivation and imagination. Let's beat our competitors together."

Olmert told Ynetnews he is visiting Japan in a bid to strengthen trade and deepen ties with Japan's leading companies.

He said the success of his visit could only be measured by the establishment of joint ventures for research and development and paving the way for deepening ties and mutual commitments.
