Israelis warned to avoid Sinai trips

High alert issued for Israelis not to visit Jordan and Egypt during the upcoming Passover holiday, warn of attacks by terrorists

Police warned Israelis on Sunday not to visit Jordan and Egypt in the coming weeks in wake of recent threats of terrorist attacks such as those that killed 34 people in the Egyptian Sinai peninsula in October.

“Even though these are just recommendations, every traveler should check the meanings of these risks carefully and avoid putting himself
or those close to him in unnecessary danger,” the national police terror unit said in a statement.

Islamic terrorists killed 34 people, including 11 Israelis, in bombings of two resorts in Sinai in October, which Israeli and security sources around the world have blamed on al-Qaeda. Hundreds of Israelis are expected to flock to the peninsula, which Israel surrendered to Egypt as a part of a 1982 peace deal, during the Passover holiday next week.

Police also said Israeli tourists should show “alertness and general caution” when visiting the Philippines, Thailand and Turkey.

Such alerts have always been in place for Israelis regarding countries in the Arab world, as well as Nigeria, Pakistan, Malaysia and Kenya. The nations most dangerous to Israelis, police say, are Afghanistan and Iran, which is sworn to the destruction of the Jewish state.
