TEL AVIV - Two Moroccan artists decided to cancel their planned trip to Israel after Hamas made threats on their lives. Abedssalam Spiany and Daudi Elkharat were both supposed to perform at the Andalusia Orchestra's 10th anniversary concert, which is scheduled for April 27th in Tel Aviv. “I am sorry to inform you that Abedssalam Spiany cannot comply with your invitation and is forced to cancel his planned trip to Israel,” a fax sent to the orchestra’s CEO, Motty Malca, read. “Spiany was faxed a story from the French newspaper La Tribune declaring, black over white,Hamas would kill him if he sets foot on Israeli soil… Mr. Spiany fears for his life,” the fax continued. Daudi had apparently received a similar fax. 'Abedssalam is unwanted in Palestine' A Hamas statement published in the French newspaper said, “Abedssalam is unwanted in Palestine. This land has been burning ever since Sharon was elected.” “Recent worsening of relations between Palestinian opposition forces and Sharon’s war machine, the IDF, placed both parties in a blood bath,” the statement said. "If Abedsallam follows through with his obligations and goes ahead with the performance, he should take into consideration that he is hurting the Arab nation. In light of this, we warn him.” Does not reflect national mood in Morocco Malca said that even though the orchestra is troubled by the published Hamas statement, it is not an indication of a national Moroccan mood or frame of mind. “The Andalusia Orchestra has been in touch with Moroccan musicians and singers for many, many years, and will undoubtedly continue to do so for many years to come,” he said.
