Contractors say 'no' to trailer housing
President of Israeli contractors’ association says Gaza evacuees should move to available Negev apartments
TEL AVIV - President of Israel's contractors association, Aharon Cohen, lashed out Monday at the government’s plan to house disengagement evacuees in temporary trailers before moving them to permanent housing.
“We should avoid wasting millions,” Cohen said. “Past mistakes should not be repeated. Evacuees should not be housed in trailers when there are thousands of apartments ready and available.”
He said the government would have to spend millions on trailers and required infrastructure.
“The entire investment would go down the drain,” he added and specified the trailers would remain vacant after residents move to their new homes.
The alternative
As a substitute, Cohen said Gaza evacuees could be housed in thousands of apartments just waiting to be filled in the Negev.
“These are new apartments, spacious, and located next to existing communal services, without any need to invest additional money in social infrastructure and new roads,” Cohen said.
Cohen called on the evacuation ministers committee as well as the disengagement office to cooperate with contractors and banks to “work together to find a solution to the decreasing value of apartments, making it worthwhile both for contractors and the country.”
