HEBRON - A Palestinian driver hit and killed an Israeli reserve soldier with his taxicab late on Monday in the West Bank and then died after troops fired at him, in an incident the army said could be a terror attack and Palestinians called a road accident.

The man had driven near group of troops on a bridge on a main highway before running one of them over, killing him instantly despite attempts to resuscitate him, witnesses said. Troops then fired on the taxi, injuring the driver. He was then evacuated to a Hebron hospital, where he later died from his wounds.

IDF officials say they believe the incident was a terrorist attack, but are investigating the possibility it could have been a routine traffic accident.

Palestinian medics said they found seven bullets in the 30-year-old driver, who they added was not a member of a terrorist organization. No armed group claimed responsibility for the killing.

Weekend of attempts

The incident was the latest in a weekend of terror attempts.

Earlier Monday, a Palestinian surrendered a 13 kg (28.5 lb) explosive vest to IDF soldiers near the Itamar settlement in the northern West Bank.

And on Shabbat a soldier was lightly injured when a Palestinian stabbed him in the throat and stole his gun.
