Anti-pullout protesters may get wet

Police motorcyclists may use water cannons to battle anti-pullout demonstrators who block roads and highways with burning tires, Yedioth Ahronoth reports

TEL AVIV - Local police could fight fire with water when it comes to settlers protesting the upcoming pullout from Gaza and the northern West Bank.

Officers in motorcycle units plan to soon carry personal water cannons to combat right-wingers and settlers who block roads to protest the planned withdrawal, newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth reported on Tuesday.

Police have already begun arming officers with clubs to stop potential protesters, who have been increasingly active in recent weeks as the pullout date nears.

Trying to break into prison

Officers have arrested dozens of anti-pullout demonstrators who blocked highways in Israel with burning tires, halting traffic for hours at a time.

Police have had trouble until now regaining control of such incidents without blocking roads themselves with their squad cars.

Police detained 11 right-wingers and dispersed dozens late on Monday when they tried to break into a prison to free three youngsters who were jailed for blocking a major highway, police said. A court ordered their release on the condition they stay away from the jail for a week.

The protesters denied any wrongdoing and said their demonstration was peaceful.
