More arrests of radicals coming

State Prosecutor promises 'zero tolerance' in light of violent eruptions during disengagement

HAIFA - State Prosecutor Eran Shendar said he is concerned about disengagement-related violence and promised additional arrests of radicals.

He said the majority of Gush Katif and West Bank residents are law-abiding citizens, and expressed empathy with their situation.

“The sky fell on them and on their home. Are we going to scream incitement every time they protest?” Shendar said.

But he said radicals who make the headlines are the ones that must be taken care of.

The prosecutor said his Sunday night approval of a settler’s administrative detention was backed up by information of how dangerous the suspect is, and he promised more such arrests in the future as well.

Shendar also expressed sympathy with the public’s emotions.

“The public feels the law enforcement system failed to battle offenses that affect quality of life, such as drugs, violence and public corruption,” he said.

'Zero tolerance' for violence

Shendar counted the reasons for failure: budget cutbacks, preoccupation with terror, and the lack of a witness protection program.

Shendar said he has “zero tolerance” for anti-disengagement violence.

On the other hand, he said, any expressions of incitement must treated with logic, so that “common sense should not divorce the judicial system.”
