JERUSALEM - International gay pride events scheduled for mid-August, which were expected to culminate with the Gay Pride Parade in Jerusalem, have been brought forward due to the upcoming Gaza and West Bank disengagement, gay activists said Sunday.

The events will now take place between 6-12 August.

“We are part of the nation, and as such we cannot deny the fact that the disengagement plan is expected to commence simultaneous to the global (gay) pride events,” Tel Aviv Council member and gay activist Itay Fuchs said.

“We have decided we would not celebrate while Jews are being evacuated from their homes.”

The gay community reached the decision despite its ongoing battle against the Jewish Orthodox sector, which has opposed the idea of holding the parade in Jerusalem.
