Anti-pullout orange bracelet
Orange a no-no for Indian visitors
Knesset guards prevent guests from bringing in orange scarves into Knesset for fear they would be used as anti-pullout propaganda
JERUSALEM - Seeing orange: It appears the color orange, used by settlers to symbolize their anti-pullout struggle, has made Knesset security guards lose their better judgment.
Last week, a delegation of Indian parliamentarians carrying orange scarves who came to visit the Knesset was asked to leave them at the entrance, so they are not used for political protest.
The guests, who wanted to give the scarves as a gift to their hosts, chose the color orange because it represents the major opposition party in their country.
Delegation member Sharan Prakash, however, downplayed the embarrassing incident.
‘Paying the price for Sharon’s dictatorship’
“They delayed one of us because they thought the color symbolizes protest, but we handed out those gifts throughout our trip in Israel,” he said.
Right-wing politicians, meanwhile, were furious over the incident.
National Union Knesset Member Uri Ariel slammed the guards’ conduct and said “the Indians had to pay the price for Sharon’s dictatorship.”
A Knesset spokesman who responded to the story also admitted the conduct of guards involved in the incident was “somewhat exaggerated.”
