Arabic at the airport?
Officials pledge to post Arabic signs at Ben-Gurion airport following Knesset member’s complaint
TEL AVIV - Airport officials have pledged to post Arabic-language signs at Ben-Gurion International Airport, after an Arab Knesset member filed a complaint with the transportation minister, Arab-Israeli newspaper al-Sinara reports.
According to the report, Knesset Member Issam Makhoul (Hadash-Ta’al) wrote to Minister Meir Sheetrit to complain that there are no signs in Arabic in Israel’s new airport, even though Arabic is one of the country’s two official languages.
Following the complaint, Airports Authority Director-General Gabi Ofir pledged to post the required signs by the end of May.
“Signs in Arabic are a basic thing for Arab citizens in Israel, and are required to change the racist position on the matter,” Makhoul said.
Makhoul to visit airport
Arabic-language signs are also intended to make airport employees realize Arabic is an official language in Israel and should naturally appear on public signs, the Knesset member added.
Makhoul vowed to continue his struggle on the matter and said he would soon visit the airport with deputy minister Michael Melchior (Labor) to ensure officials have indeed delivered on their pledge.
Notably, many signs in Israel, including highway signs and street signs, feature a Hebrew, Arabic, and English display.
