Plan: kibbutz residents to play settlers

Security establishment considering renting out Negev town or kibbutz as practice model for scheduled Gaza settlement evacuation

The security establishment is considering the option of renting out a western Negev area kibbutz for a limited time to use it as a practice model for the evacuation of Gush Katif settlements in the framework of the disengagement plan, Ynet has learned Thursday.

IDF and Eshkol Regional Council sources have confirmed the report.

During the past few weeks security establishment officials have approached western Negev area towns and kibbutzim situated in close proximity to the Kissufim Crossing in Gaza, among them Nir Oz, Ein Hashlosha, and Kibbutz Kerem Shalom, to examine the possibility of using the residents and their homes in a military exercise aimed at training IDF Southern Command and Southern District Police in settler evacuation.

According to an IDF source, the renting out of an entire town or kibbutz is currently being weighed, but no deal has been struck as of yet.

Eshkol Regional Council Head Uri Naamati has confirmed there have been talks with at least one kibbutz in the area. The Defense Ministry, the IDF Spokesman’s Office and the Israel Police Spokesman’s Office have not responded to the report as of yet.
