Qureia, Assad to meet
Palestinian prime minister arrives in Damascus for meeting with Syrian president
Palestinian Prime Minister Ahmed Qureia arrived in Damascus Thursday for a meeting with Syrian President Bashar Assad, signaling renewed ties between the two governments.
Qureia is scheduled to first meet with his Syrian counterpart, followed by a meeting with Assad.
The Palestinian prime minister is expected to update his hosts regarding PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas’ visit to Washington last week and also discuss the present situation in the Palestinian territories.
The meeting between the two figures marks the renewed coordination between the Palestinian Authority and Syria. In the framework of this coordination, senior Palestinian officials have previously visited Syria and met with government officials and Palestinian faction leaders residing in the country.
Meanwhile, PA officials said Syria has not prevented, but rather encouraged dialogue between the Authority and Palestinian factions in Syria.
