The Ynetnews Special Report on animal testing in Israel has evoked near universal responses opposing the practice.

“It is absolutely disgusting,” Jennifer Charny wrote regarding vivisection in Israel. “And to think it is being done in a country where so many people are already suffering. We should be ashamed of ourselves that we have kept quiet about it for so long.”

The series detailed the extent of animal testing in the country, and the lack of clear regulations and monitoring of the practice by government agencies.

Patricia Salazar Luna said, “I cannot understand why scientists keep on practicing cruel and useless tests on animals.”

“Experience has proven that animal organisms do not react in the same manner as human organisms do,” she said. “Therefore, I consider it to be inhumane and unethical to continue making innocent animals suffer.”

Lynn Venditti said, “Animal research is an abomination. This insanity must stop!”

However, a handful of respondents took the other position.

“Is your page on animal testing an ad? It certainly has the bias and one-sided appearance of one,” a reader said. “I support animal testing.”

Another reader said, " I am constantly baffled as to why some people who can pass a poor man in the street and ignore a sick panhandler can show such an outpouring of emotion over vivisection."

"Yes, it it not pleasent. You would rather not do it yourselves. But get real, it does save lives. Human lives," he said. "Even if only

10 percent of the activity was directly concerned with saving a single life I would be not only be for it, I might also donate money to promote it.

Even as vocal Ynetnews readers condemned the practice, Ynetnews is seeking a qualified commentator on the subject who can discuss and defend the benefits of animal testing, whether it be someone from the medical or pharmaceutical fields. Qualified opinions from legal, Jewish and rabbinic authorities as to the ethical issues in Jewish tradition raised by this practice also are encouraged. Please write to us via Red Mail, and we will publish the best responses.
