Peres, Cabel, promise to clean books
Two meet with Minister-without-Portfolio Ramon and agree to clean up Labor Party; Cabel says he will check membership roll and set new date for primaries
Labor Party Chairman and Vice Premier Shimon Peres called a meeting Friday morning at his office with the party's general-secretary, Knesset Member Eitan Cabel, Minister-without-Portfolio Haim Ramon and Labor Treasurer Moshe Cohen.
At the meeting, Peres and Cabel agreed to cooperate in what they called "holding the party together and cleaning house."
The two agreed that they would pass any suspicious membership forms on to the police.
Cabel told Peres that he plans to check the party membership roll in a quick, quiet and honest fashion in order to clean of forged forms.
This followed a press conference Cabel held on Thursday with retired judge Sarah Frisch, who reported that, after checking 10,000 membership forms at Labor Party headquarters, she found a great many to be invalid.
In the course of reviewing all the forms, Cabel will recommend setting a new date for the Labor Party chairmanship, a date that will be agreed upon by all the relevant players.
Cabel said on Thursday that checking the forms will take two months, and afterward, can the election be held.
Vice Premier Peres said that he supported Cabel's efforts. Labor Party sources said that he even gave up on his earlier demand that the elections be held in two weeks.
