No mercy, no forgiveness

Chief of Staff goes on offensive against potential refusers, says army will send clear message to soldiers who refuse orders

Chief of Staff Dan Halutz went on the offensive Monday against IDF soldiers who may refuse orders to carry out the disengagement plan.

In a letter to army officers, Halutz said activists would try “legal and illegal” means to derail the pullout, but warned there would be no mercy or mixed messages about soldiers who refuse to carry out orders.

“Anti-disengagement protesters are doing a lot to derail the pullout, and have turned to IDF soldiers and their families to refuse orders.

“This call is also coming from public figures and leaders. The future unity of the IDF as an army of the people is on their shoulders, not only on the shoulders of IDF officers,” he said.

“To my great regret, there is an ongoing effort to paint observant IDF soldiers as potential refusers, largely due to irresponsible representatives who have appointed themselves masters over these soldiers.

“We may hesitate, and feel pain, but at we must not refuse to carry out the mission. The Israel Defense Force will not forgive insubordination, and will not show weakness," he said.

In addition, IDF Southern Commander Dan Harel decided Monday to prosecute an observant officer in an elite unit who told his commanders last week he could not take part in his unit’s disengagement participation.
