First day of pro-pullout march ends

300 people gather at Tel Chai for ‘Leaving Gaza, going back to Zionism’ demonstration; former Shin Bet Chief Ami Ayalon says settlers’ mission complete

TEL CHAI - Some 300 people gathered at Tel Chai to mark the conclusion of the first leg of the pro-pullout march titled, “Leaving Gaza, going back to Zionism.”

Participants included former Shin Bet Chief Ami Ayalon, entrepreneur Steff Wertheimer, and Rachel Rabin, the sister of slain Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin.

During the course of the day activists handed out blue and white ribbons in the northern town of Kiryat Shemona and around the vicinity.

Ayalon said the idea for the march came to him when an IDF officer called to ask him why Israelis are not supporting the army.

According to Ayalon, the mission of the Gaza Strip settlers, who were sent there by the government, has been completed.

'Develop the Negev and Galilee'

President of the Council for Peace and Security Major General (res.) Danny Rothschild, said not carrying out the pullout would cause far greater damage than the pullout itself.

Meanwhile, Rachel Rabin said she hopes her brother’s peace plan would be realized, while Wertheimer called on the demonstrators to develop the Negev and Galilee regions.

Rabbi for Kibbutz Tirat Zvi and Religious Kibbutz Movement Yeshiva Head at Maaleh Gilboa, Shmuel Reiner, said these difficult times call for unity, and Kiryat Shemona Deputy Mayor Sami Malul, a Likud Central Committee member, said he supports the disengagement as it is the country’s best option.

The march is expected to continue Monday morning, whereupon the pullout supporters are set to make their way from Carmiel to the Haifa area.
