Gaza pullout a family affair

Like father, like son; Nuhad and Musal Abu Rish will join the tens of thousands of IDF soldiers set to take part in Israel's planned evacuation of all settlements in the Gaza Strip this month; Nuad says he is proud of serving his army duty with his son

TEL AVIV – For two IDF soldiers, a planned pullout from the Gaza Strip this month will be a family affair.

Nuhad Abu Rish, 44, and his son Mursal, 19, will join tens of thousands of Israeli troops who are set to start evacuating all 21 settlements from Gaza on August 17, the Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper reported on Wednesday

“I’m in charge of operations on the field and my son is a border policeman,” Nuad told Yedioth. “I also have a son who will be drafted soon. Meanwhile, my wife is going crazy at home worrying about everyone.”

The Abu Rish family has a long military history. Nuhad’s brother, Imar, was killed while serving as an IDF soldier in Lebanon.

“It prides me to work alongside my son,” Nuhad said. “We meet up every night, help one another as must as we can and share experiences.”

Nuhad said he and Mursal took part in a military exercise where troops simulated an evacuation of a settler home.

“Everyone was done in a way to cause as little anguish and physical pain as possible,” Nuhad said.

“We learned how to deal with the children of settlers who refuse to evacuate,” he added. “They told us to be sympathetic, to take them gently by the hand and explain that there is no other choice, and that they have to go somewhere else.”
