Red Cross suspends work in Gaza

Following growing unrest in the Gaza Strip among rival Palestinian factions, the International Red Cross suspends all field work in the Gaza Strip; decision comes after kidnapping of three U.N. workers, including two foreigners and a Palestinian, by terrorists from Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas's Fatah group

GAZA - The International Red Cross has suspended field work in the Gaza Strip in light of the precarious security situation there, a spokesman told the Associated Press on Tuesday.

The decision came after two foreigners and their Palestinian driver were kidnapped by gunmen in the town of Khan Younis and released only after a shootout between the militants and Palestinian security forces.

The Red Cross has also closed its office in the town, said the organization's spokesman, Iyad Nasser.

The Geneva-based organization's field work includes patrols near conflict areas adjacent to Jewish settlements and attendance at public events.

About 25 foreigners work for the Red Cross throughout the Gaza Strip, and many more Palestinians. The kidnapping on Monday was the result of a dispute between different branches of the Palestinian security forces in Gaza.

Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas has reorganized the security branches to get them to better control the streets where terrorists groups have gained increasing control during almost five years of fighting with Israel.
