Jewish terror suspect attempts suicide

Eliran Golan, charged with planning to murder Arab-Israelis, including Knesset member, in serious condition after hanging himself in holding cell

Jewish terror suspect Eliran Golan, charged with planning to murder Arab civilians, including Knesset Member Issam Makhoul, attempted to commit suicide early Thursday in the Kishon detention center.

Guards noticed Golan, who hung himself, and called in a doctor. He was later taken to Haifa’s Rambam hospital and is currently in very serious condition.

Two months ago, a court ruled Golan is sane and is fit to stand trial. According to the indictment served against him, he placed four explosive devices meant to hurt Arab residents in Haifa. Some of the charges exploded, while others were discovered ahead of time.

In one case, he placed an explosive device in the balcony of a Haifa couple, a Jewish woman and an Arab man, after suspecting their son assaulted his brother. The bomb, which was placed under a table, was discovered before it went off.

In another case, he placed a bomb under a vehicle belonging to an Arab Haifa family, after suspecting the family hosted a terrorist who carried out a terror attack in the area. This explosive device also failed to go off.

The indictment further describes how an explosive device was placed next to the women's entrance of the Haj Abdallah Mosque in Haifa. The bomb was detonated after a woman opened the door. She was injured in the incident.

A fourth device was placed under a vehicle belong to the wife of Knesset Member Issam Makhoul.

Golan is accused of calling the family's home and impersonating an insurance agent, in a bid to extract information regarding the family's car.

Golan apparently placed an explosive device on one of the vehicle's tires. The bomb exploded, but no one was injured.

Meanwhile, the Haifa District Court convicted 23-year-old Alexander Rabinovitch in May of obtaining explosive material and bullets for Golan.

Rabinovitch served in the IDF during the alleged affair and is suspected of helping Golan obtain explosives to "take action" against the Arab community in Haifa.

The prosecution said at the time that Rabinovitch supplied Golan with explosives and rifle bullets, knowing the latter planned to use them to hurt or kill Arabs, who he said gave support to terrorism.
