Pullout protester dies of injuries

New immigrant from US was in critical condition after torching himself outside of his Hebrew learning center; he told paramedics he was protesting the disengagement

The youth who set himself on fire a week ago in Jerusalem to protest the disengagement died of his injuries Tuesday evening. The youth, a 21 year-old immigrant from the United states, was hospitalized in intensive care in critical condition in the Hadassa Ein Kerem hospital in Jerusalem.

Mati Goldstein, a Magen David Adom paramedic who responded to the incident on August 31 in Jerusalem’s Gad Street, told Ynet: “I got the call and immediately made my way to the scene. I saw a man with burns all over his body. At first he had a hard time talking. He said he was hot. Later he said he he set himself on fire in protest of the disengagement plan.”

Police said the man set himself on fire ourside the Atzion Hebrew learning center, where the youth studied.

A security guard who spotted the rising smoke put out the fire with a fire extinguisher.

Ulpan employees said he was an eccentric man who did not reside at the ulpan with the rest of the students.

“He rented an apartment in Jerusalem and decided to set himself on fire when there were no students present in the ulpan,” one worker said.

“He immigrated alone from the U.S. in 2004. He had never expressed himself in such a way that led you to believe he was disgruntled or suicidal.”

Recently, 54 year-old pullout objector Yelena Bosinova of Kedumim set herself on fire during the first days of the pullout in protest of the evacuation. She has since died of her wounds.
